Mark Roman's Crackers
Submitted by paul virtue on 5 June 2010 - 2:45pm.
I have often tried to explain to those who were not there, why this time, the music, the venues, the fashion and the positive aspirations of these working class people were so special.
The clubs were unsuccessful for the owners because the audience spent what little money they had on clothes and expensive import records.
My personal favourite was when in the hot summer of 1976, when air conditioning was too expensive in Goodmayes, the manager at the Lacy closed off the cold water taps in the toilets, so that at least one of us would buy a drink.
Nice to hear Mark's story and recognised some names I have not heard for a long time. He unsurprisingly picked most of the important tunes of the time.
I think he is one of the reasons I still have a vinyl habit at 52. I have got to go now and try and locate my Barry Waite 7".
Nice one Paul, glad you
